The one way to win - scyther and pinsir. They run around level 14 or 15. Spore from parasect, plus hard hits. Or smeargle, you know
Basically, its rarity and level
Surewinners (~90% of the time) - Lv13-15 Pinsir/Scyther
Sortof good (~10% of the time) - High level Butterfree/Beedrill
Horrid (~0%) - Venonat, Caterpie, Weedle,m anything not listed above.

Yeah butterfree is not enough. You need a pinsir or a scyther. A pokemon about lv20 and knows hypnosis/sleep powder might helps you catching it.

I hate Cooltrainer Nick with a passion.
Just keep restarting until he's not in the contest. Although Camper Barry will beat you sometimes too.
Use a level 20 something Parasect and try to catch level 16 Pokemon (Butterfree, Scyther, and Pinsir are your best bets.)

Although it does mystify me why some people can place high with Caterpie and such. Although, I have placed high-ish (like 2nd or so) with Caterpie, Weedle, and Kakuna ... that were lvl 18. Yeah, they run that high.
But Scyther or Pinsir is pretty much a shoe-in. You'll win about 95% of the time. The prizes are:
3rd - Gold Berry
2nd - Everstone
1st - Sun Stone

the prizes aren't really worth it since only 2 pokemon need a sun stone.

Yesterday I played my crystal, and I founded that if you catch high level Beedrill, you could win by luck.

Re: Bug Catching Contest
A somewhat-related question, but I have noticed that Weedle doesn't seem to be available in Crystal. It is (and its evos, of course) available in the Bug Catching Contest?
I believe that all of the Bug Pokemon (Caterpie, Weedle, Pinsir, Scyther, Venonat, Paras) are available there for the most part as well. In Crystal, I'm not sure. Isn't Sunkern also available in that area?
If someone could help, that would be great.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Bug Catching Contest
I ran a search on the site using "National Park" as the searchwords and the Pokedex entries which are listed indicate the Pokemon available during Bug Catching Contests. The Pokemon available in Crystal are Caterpie, Metapod, Butterfree, Weedle, Kakuna, Beedrill, Venonat, Pinsir, and Scyther. I'm not sure if any Pokemon have been left out in this list since the search results might not be exhaustive. In any case, I guess I have answered your queries. Firstly, the Weedle family is available in Crystal's Contest, just that even the Weedles are only half as common as Caterpie. Secondly, Pokemon like Paras and Sunkern can be found in the National Park, but they become [u]unavailable[/i] during Bug Catching Contests.

*Update* K I decided to write something up since the site doesn't have any dedicated guide to the Contest. Here you go:

Thanks for that, sNOwBaLL. The guide, too!
That will help me when I get to Goldenrod! Just one more question, is the Pokemon you show for judging allowed for you to keep?
Thanks in advance.

Yes it can be. In my late silver my very first win was with a male Butterfree; I don't remember it's level. But he became one of my treasures eventually trained into his sixties which is why it irritates me that I can't remember for the freaking life of me what I named him. It could have been Melville after an episode of the Rugrats; was obsessed as a kid. Suddenly now I am thinking Angel though.
I have won ONCE with a Syther and have lost with Syther and Pincer. I even once won with a Venonat...or, did I get second that time? I actually get second a whole bloody hell of a lot. XP

The prizes suck. Only reason why I participated was for the Scyther catch...

Re: Bug Catching Contest
I have been trying for sometime now to win the contest in order to have a sun stone which i need to evolve a Pokemon on my team.
After 8 rounds in which i didn't place 3 times and only came 2nd or 3rd the rest i am starting to get very frustrated. 2 of the non placing times i used a butterfree level 13 or 14. and the other times i have used a variety of Pokemon including 3 scyther a pinsir and a level 18 weedle so obviously the idea that the the contest is easy to win is wrong. If anyone has suggestions that don't include 'keep on trying' they would be much appreciated.

Re: Bug Catching Contest
Try catching a high level Scyther. If you can shoot for a beedrill. I always win with those, and if you caught a pinsir how did u lose????????
